The Wilson Ornithological Society

Klamm Award

In 2005, the Council of the Wilson Ornithological Society established the William and Nancy Klamm Service Award to honor the history of service and dedication to the society shown by the Klamms. Bill served as Treasurer from 1968 to 1973, both he and Nancy regularly attended Wilson meetings, and both also served on the Auditing Committee during the 1970s and 1980s. Bill died in 1998. In 2002, Nancy passed away and bequeathed a substantial portion of her assets to the Wilson Ornithological Society, more than doubling the society's endowment fund. Beginning in 2007, the Klamm Service Award is given annually to a member who has performed extraordinary service to the society.

Dr. Richard C. Banks

Emeritus Research Zoologist, U.S. Geological Survey and Smithsonian Institution

In 1953, a young man from Steubenville, Ohio, attended his first Wilson Ornithological Club meeting with his parents. This was the beginning of a more than fifty-year relationship between Richard C. Banks and the Wilson Ornithological Society. Dick joined the Wilson Ornithological Society in 1959 as a graduate student, and since then his service has been varied and extensive. He has been active on numerous committees including the Wilson Prize Committee, the selection committee for the Fuertes, Nice and Stewart Awards, the Publications Committee, the Scientific Program Committee, and the Resolutions Committee, and in many instances he served as Chair of the committee. He has served as an elected Council member (1979-1982), Second Vice-President (1987-1989), First Vice-President (1989-1991), and President of the Society (1991-1993). During his presidency, Dick established the Committee on Undergraduate Outreach to help stimulate an interest in ornithology among undergraduate students and to help maintain and focus that interest to stimulate students to continue studies in ornithology. He was the first editor of the Ornithological Newsletter, which was established as a quarterly publication in 1976 and led to the formation of the Ornithological Societies of North America (OSNA). He continued as editor of the newsletter until 1989. He co-chaired the Local Committee for the 2005 annual meeting in Beltsville, Maryland. He has given his time reviewing many manuscripts for the Wilson Bulletin, and he has also made more tangible donations, both to the Van Tyne library and the Centennial Fund. Dick continues to be very active on the Wilson Council, and has modeled professional behavior and responsibility for many Wilson members at various stages in their careers. He is a staunch supporter of ornithology, ornithologists, and the Wilson Ornithological Society. It is with the utmost respect and gratitude that we present the 2008 William and Nancy Klamm Service Award to Richard C. Banks.

Dr. George A. Hall

Professor Emeritus, Department of Chemistry, West Virginia University

The first recipient of the William and Nancy Klamm Service Award epitomizes this dedication to the Society. Despite his vocation as a chemist, George A. Hall has served the Wilson Ornithological Society in many capacities over more than five decades. After joining the Wilson Ornithological Club in 1946, he was the Registration Chairman for the annual meeting at Madison, Wisconsin, in 1949. He co-chaired the local committee for the 1958 annual meeting in Wheeling, West Virginia. From 1964 to 1973 he served as Editor of the Wilson Bulletin, which included William Klamm's tenure as Treasurer. After a decade as editor, George was elected to the Wilson Council in 1973. His term as Council member ended early when he was elected Second Vice-President in 1975. He served as Second Vice-President from 1975 to 1977, First Vice -President from 1977 to 1979, and President from 1979 to 1981. In 1984, he became the Ornithological Literature Editor for the Wilson Bulletin, a position he held for more than a decade. George has been a perennial attendee at Wilson meetings; he attended thirty-five consecutive Wilson meetings from 1964 to 2001. In addition to serving on Council, over the years George provided varied support to the Society in numerous ways, serving as Chair of the Nominating Committee, Chair of the Wilson Prize Selection Committee, Chair of the Resolutions committee, Chair of the Archives and History Committee, and even acting Secretary for one meeting. In 1988, he co-authored the history of the first one hundred years of the Wilson Ornithological Society with Jerry Jackson and Harold Mayfield. He also gave a presentation on Alexander Wilson during the centennial meeting in that same year. Those of us who have served with George appreciated his mentoring of early-stage ornithologists, his knowledge of the Society and its workings, and his quick wit. It is with great admiration that we award the first William and Nancy Klamm Service Award to George A. Hall.
