for the 129th Meeting of WOS
Fort Myers, Florida
9 - 12 March 2017
WOS invites students planning on presenting a contributed oral paper or a poster at the society's annual meeting to apply for a travel award. These awards are both need- and merit-based, and are intended to encourage student participation by defraying part of the cost of attending the meeting.
Procedure and Notification
The application deadline is 9 December 2016.
Students must complete a cover sheet and submit a travel budget and expanded abstract to be considered for a travel award. The travel budget should include transportation and accommodation expenses only (travel awards will not cover expenses associated with registration or meals). The expanded abstract must be written in English, and no more than two pages of double-spaced text, using minimum 1" margins, and 12-point font size. Applicants may optionally include a third page with up to two tables or figures with captions.
Please note that submission of an abstract for a travel award is not the same as submission of the abstract for registration. Individuals applying for Student Travel Awards must still register for the meeting and submit a regular standard abstract for the Scientific Program. To be officially considered for the scientific program, students must submit a revised, concise abstract to the Scientific Program committee no later than 20 January 2017 (at that point, you can also indicate if you wish to be considered for a student presentation award; that program is separate from, and independent of, the travel award competition).
The Travel Awards Committee intends to select recipients, and inform all applicants of the outcome, with the tentative plan being to do so by 13 January, before the prior to the final call for submission of abstracts for the scientific program on 20 January.
To apply, complete the following steps:
- Submit a preliminary application using the form available here
- Complete a full cover page & application form, following instructions therein, and send it as a PDF file attached to an email addressed to Dr. Dennis Siegfried, email@example.com
Eligibility for Student Travel Awards
Students at the undergraduate, MS, or PhD levels will be eligible to apply for Travel Awards. In addition, individuals who have recently completed their degree requirements will also be eligible to apply; the Travel Awards Committee defines recent students as individuals who have completed all requirements of their degree within the past year. Recent students must, however, be presenting results of research that they carried out during their degree program.
Students will be eligible to apply for a Student Travel Award regardless of whether they are participating in the regular contributed sessions or are part of a symposium. Students must, however, be the first and presenting author of the presentation, which may include additional co-authors.
Awards will be determined through a competitive process among applicants intending to present work associated with each of several educational levels (undergraduate, Masters, Doctoral). The Committee will consider all submissions for funding, even for work that is currently in process or being analyzed.
The Student Travel Awards Committee will base decisions on evidence of eligibility in the application, and on clarity, completeness, scientific merit, and originality of the research to be presented, as detailed in the expanded abstract.
